How to Backup a Database
0 Comments Published February 8th, 2010 in Hosting South Africa News, South Africa Cheap hosting, South Africa Hosting, Hosting South AfricaHow to Backup a Database
As part of our weekly or monthly Security and System Maintenance routine to keep our own websites and/or blogs up and running, we should clean out the overheads and backup the database or databases in our cpanel.
We do the same for our Customers at Web Design Consulting who trust they can relax while the Support & Maintenance Team ensure the Top Performance of their websites and blogs.
How to Clean Overheads in a Database
Due to a number of regular requests coming in, let me show you the quick and easy steps as to How to Clean Overheads in a Database – before you back it up:
1.
Log into your cpanel
2.
Go to “Databases” and here click on “phpMyDatabase”.
3.
On the new window that opens, to the left, you see all your databases in a vertical dropdown, in alphabetical order.
Now simply tick the first of these databases, and, on the table that now opens to the right, you see the “Overheads” to the far right and added up at the bottom of that column. This is the accumulated waste you want to get rid of by optimizing the table. It will clean your blog and make it faster.
What you now do is to tick “Check tables having overhead” (it’s in blue under “sum”) and as a result you will see the corresponding tables getting ticked, so you see exactly where your overheads basically came from.
As a next step you tock the little drop down to the right of “Check tables having overhead” saying “With Selected” and here you select “Optimize Table”.
Now let it do its job! Just wait a moment…
How to Backup a Database
Once it’s done, let’s continue exactly where we are… and I show you How to Backup a Database:
4.
At the top, click on EXPORT.
Don’t touch or change anything here… what you do is…
5.
At the bottom, tick “gzipped” and then on “GO” to the far right.
6.
If you get a popup… select “Save File” and “OK”.
Now this database backup will download to your computer, to a designated folder or your “Downloads”. If you are on Firefox, you will see a note “One active download” to the bottom right of your screen. Call it up and let it do its job.
We tend not to pay too much attention to backups as there’s always sooo much to do… I know!
However, may this little Tutorial help you to rather be safe than sorry.
And besides, if you don’t want to bother with this, remember that you can have backups automatically done for you on our Best Web Hosting Services for just $6 a year – perhaps a smart thing to do; think about it!

Building Your Personal Blog
0 Comments Published February 7th, 2010 in Hosting South Africa News, South Africa Cheap hosting, South Africa Hosting, Hosting South AfricaBuilding Your Personal Blog
I thought a while before choosing the title “Building Your Personal Blog” for an article where I actually focus on the importance of having one’s own “Author Blog”.
Why did I hesitate?
It’s the terminology: many people believe that one has to be an author – in other words an accomplished writer or publisher – to build a name with an “Author Blog”. Actually, in the beginning I thought so myself.
Well, the Internet is the big equalizer and the fact is that everybody can and should build their name, brand, reputation and… authority – ideally with a Customized and Search Engine Optimized Semiomantics Author Blog – amongst the WP Best Themes and CMS out there on the web.
Building Your Personal Blog is about YOU
Building your Personal Blog can be about anything that has to do with YOU – your interests, your opinions, thoughts, Artwork, photos, sketches, products, services and more.
In my above example you see me writing about one of my favourite topics: my Secret Garden and all its exciting inhabitants. It’s my view, my pictures, my words – it reflect who I am and what I stand for. If you click on the picture you can go there directly and have a look as to what an Author Blog looks like and the many features it offers. . . well, it’s not just any Author Blog of course, it’s Semiomantics, what else?!
Personal Blog as a Diary or Journal
Some people go so far as to use their Personal Blog as a Diary or Journal.
Here’s a little warning though: As long as they know that everything – absolutely everything on the Internet is never ‘private’ and they don’t confide their most intimite thoughts to this treacherous and unforgetting environment, all is fine – otherwise, wake up and be warned: there is no Privacy on the Internet, ‘Big Brother Is Watching You’ is very much alive here and if you wish certain things not to be known, don’t put them on the Internet – as simple as that.
How to Build Authority and Credibility with your Blog
Having said that, I’d rather refer to this Personal Blog as an “Author Blog” – designed and tuned to build Authority and Credibility with your Blog.
Best Start with a Semiomantics Author Blog
Start Blogging efficiently with a customized Semiomantics Author Blog to:
- control YOUR name and identity;
- do it YOUR WAY – write about anything you like in your words, your personal style;
- build a highly visible and professional Web Presence: YOUR’s!
- prepare a solid foundation for YOUR Brand based on Authority, Credibility and Trust… and
- develop YOUR Authority on Google Top 10 and Social Networks.
Flexibility with Semiomantics Author Blogs
You have a lot of flexibility with Semiomantics Author Blogs, which allows for:
- Personalization of your Blog so it has the exact look you want and suits your taste and style – whether you want to just write about your favorite topics or get that biography out that you had in your head for so long…, whether you want to show photos, videos, slideshows, or simply communicate and interact with others … the sky is the limit!
- Customization following your main topic (keywords, categories, chapters basically) so that your Articles are seen and read where readers really hang out, eg. on Google and Social Networks… meaning Traffic to your Blog!
- Smart, Modern and Practical Features like showing Excerpts with little Thumbnails on the Home Page, so people have a choice… and when they click the whole article opens with bigger pictures.
- Elegance and Style that stand out with Pictures opening in large formats in smoky overlays! Simply unbeatable for your Photo Album or Picture Gallery!
- Make Money Automatically – while you may want to keep your Author Blog ‘clean’ of advertising, you have the opportunity to display commercial ads as well as make money with Google Ads or your Amazon Shop for instance, at any time. You are the Boss!
- Many cool features that give your Author Blog that specific edge: user-friendly Navigation so noone gets lost, Contact Form, About Page, Calendar, Search, RSS, Archives, Latest Posts…
- Trend-conscious and High-tech – with Semiomantics you will always know what’s in and get a chance to change the look whenever you feel like it.
- High Performance and Automation that work in the background while you do what you enjoy: write, post, insert pictures and get lots of compliments and potential customers for your future Brand!
- Add Functionalities and Modules as you need them, eg. a WP Best eShop, a Photo or Art Gallery, a Business Blog, an Advertising Blog, a Kids Blog and more!

Designing websites that appeal and bring the desired results is my Passion!
I am looking forward to providing you with the exact Author Blog you need and together we’ll get top Google rankings.

0 Comments Published February 6th, 2010 in Hosting South Africa News, South Africa Cheap hosting, South Africa Hosting, Hosting South AfricaHow to Install Photoshop Brushes, Styles, Shapes and more
As we start working on programs like Adobe Photoshop CS4 we have lots of brushes, filters and other tools at our disposal, however, the smart way is to save time by taking advantage of what even smarter people – spiffy Graphic Designers and Design Artists – have already done for us and generously put at our disposal in the form of free Downloads.
While we may all have our own way of doing things, here is How to Install Photoshop Brushes, Styles, Shapes and more as was taught in the Ycademy Workshop last Friday, 5th February 2010.
How to Install Photoshop Brushes, Styles, Shapes and more
If you wonder How to install Photoshop Brushes, Styles, Shapes and more… simply follow these simple steps:
1.
Go to your favorite site – like DeviantArt for instance – choose a brush you like and that you want to work with and Download it (normally as a .zip file). Observe any requests by the Artist please. Depending on the complexity of the brush, it will go fast or take a little longer… especially if you have a slow connection as we have down here in South Africa.
In my case, all Downloads go automatically into my Downloads folder (Windows 7).
2.
As a next step you want to open the zip file and copy ONLY the file with the extension .abr – which you now want to paste into your Brushes folder.
So where do you find the Brushes Folder?
3.
Go Start > My Computer > Program Files > Adobe > Adobe Photoshop CCS4 > Presets > Brushes!
Just paste the .abr file – you will see many others there already.
4.
Once that’s done, you can open it right away in your Photoshop and work with it!
The same applies for Styles (.asl), Patterns (.pat), Gradients (.grd), Color Swatches (.aco), Actions (.atn) and more.
If you download filters (plugins), you don’t go to Presets but to Plugins. Drop the .8BF file into the Filter folder and enjoy your new toy… I mean tool!
